About

As the sun drops toward the Indian Ocean, Galle Face Green comes alive. Families fly kites, couples stroll the seafront promenade, and vendors fry spicy isso vadai prawn cakes and sell grilled corn while waves break against the sea wall, with Colombo’s skyline glowing behind.

This long oceanfront lawn in the heart of Colombo was laid out in the colonial era in the mid-19th century and has been the city’s favorite public open space ever since. The historic Galle Face Hotel stands at its southern end, and the new Port City development rises to the north.

What to see and do

  • Watch the sunset over the ocean from the promenade.
  • Try the street food, especially isso vadai and kottu from the food stalls.
  • Fly a kite or buy one from the vendors.
  • Have a drink at the Galle Face Hotel, one of Asia’s oldest hotels, overlooking the green.

Know before you go
