About

Walking the ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset is one of Sri Lanka’s great simple pleasures. Waves crash against the old stone walls, the white lighthouse glows against the evening sky, and the narrow streets of the old town fill with cafés, boutiques and families out for a stroll.

The fort was first built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century and greatly expanded by the Dutch from the mid-17th century. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still a living town, where people live, work and pray inside the walls. The current lighthouse, near the fort’s southeastern corner, dates from the 1930s.

What to see and do

  • Walk the full rampart circuit, taking in the Flag Rock bastion and the lighthouse.
  • Watch the cliff jumpers who leap into the sea near Flag Rock for tips.
  • Explore the old streets, with colonial churches, the Meeran Mosque near the lighthouse, museums and galleries.
  • Stop for coffee or dinner in one of the many restaurants set in old Dutch-era buildings.

Know before you go

  • Time needed: Two hours for a walk, a full day to explore properly
  • Access: Flat and walkable; the ramparts are uneven in places
  • Cost: Free to enter the fort; some museums charge admission
  • Etiquette: Dress respectfully when visiting churches, the mosque and temples

Best time to visit

Late afternoon into sunset is the classic time on the ramparts; early morning is quiet and cool. The south coast is driest from November to April. Weekends are busy with day-trippers.

Getting there

The fort is in the center of Galle, a short walk from the bus and railway stations. Galle is reachable from Colombo on the Southern Expressway or the coastal railway.

Nearby

The stilt fishermen of Koggala are a short drive east, and Weligama Bay makes an easy day trip.
