A working fort town on the south coast where the train runs beside the sea. Cheaper than Weligama, close to the surf, and with a real local market, a lighthouse and enough cafés to keep the laptop going.
Matara is the busy fort town at the southern end of the coast railway, with a Dutch-era Star Fort, a small island temple reached by a footbridge, and a lighthouse a short ride away at Dondra Head, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka.
Getting around
The train from Colombo runs along the sea, and tuk-tuks and scooters cover the rest. Weligama and Mirissa are both within half an hour, so many people base here for the cheaper rent and ride out to the surf breaks.
Working from Matara
Fibre is available in the town centre and most stays offer a desk. Cafés near the beach road are the usual morning work spots, and the weekend market is worth a break.
