About

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the spiritual heart of Kandy and of Buddhist Sri Lanka. To the sound of drums during the daily offering ceremonies, pilgrims carrying lotus flowers file past the inner shrine that holds the relic of the tooth of the Buddha.

The temple stands within the royal palace complex beside Kandy Lake, part of the Sacred City of Kandy UNESCO World Heritage Site. The relic has long been a symbol of sovereignty in Sri Lanka, and every year it is honored with the Esala Perahera, a spectacular procession of dancers, drummers and decorated elephants.

What to see and do

  • Attend a puja, the offering ceremony held at set times each day, with traditional drumming.
  • Explore the complex, including its museums and the old royal buildings.
  • Walk around Kandy Lake, especially in the evening light.
  • Time your trip for the Esala Perahera, usually in July or August.

Know before you go

  • Time needed: One to two hours
  • Cost: Foreign visitors pay an entry fee; check the current rate
  • Dress and etiquette: Wear white or light, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees; remove shoes and hats; speak quietly; never pose with your back to Buddha images
  • Security: Expect bag checks at the entrance
  • Drones: Flying drones near the temple is prohibited

Best time to visit

Visit during an evening puja for the most atmospheric experience. Mornings are quieter. Poya (full-moon) days and the Perahera season bring very large crowds.

Getting there

The temple is in the center of Kandy, a short walk from the lake and the town center. Kandy is reached by road or by train from Colombo.
