About

Climbing Adam’s Peak is less a hike than a pilgrimage. Thousands of people climb its steps through the night, past tea shops and lanterns, to reach the summit before dawn and watch the sun rise over a sea of clouds, as the mountain throws a near-perfect triangular shadow across the land.

At 2,243 m, Sri Pada is sacred to several faiths. Buddhists revere the footprint-shaped mark at the summit as the Buddha’s, Hindus associate it with Shiva, and some Muslim and Christian traditions with Adam. That shared reverence gives the climb its unique atmosphere.

What to see and do

  • Make the night climb from Dalhousie (Nallathanni) to reach the summit for sunrise.
  • Watch the shadow of the peak appear on the clouds at dawn.
  • Visit the summit shrine respectfully, alongside pilgrims.
  • Stop at tea stalls on the way up for warmth and rest.

Know before you go

  • Time needed: Most people take three to four hours up and two to three down; start around 2 am for sunrise
  • Difficulty: Hard; thousands of steep steps
  • Cost: No formal entry fee; donations are welcome at shrines
  • Etiquette: This is a pilgrimage site. Dress modestly, remove shoes at the shrine and be respectful of worshippers
  • What to bring: Warm clothes for the cold summit, a headlamp, water and snacks

Best time to visit

The pilgrimage season usually runs from the December full moon (Unduvap Poya) to Vesak in May, when the path is lit and stalls are open. Weekends and full-moon days are extremely crowded. Outside the season, the climb is dark, wet and unsupported, and not recommended without a guide.

Getting there

Most climbers stay in Dalhousie (Nallathanni), reached by road from Hatton, which has a station on the hill-country railway. Hatton is a scenic drive from Nuwara Eliya or Kandy.

Nearby

Pair it with World’s End in Horton Plains for another great hill-country sunrise.
