Best SIM card and eSIM in Sri Lanka for remote work in 2026

Get a local SIM. It costs about US$5 for 30GB a month, takes ten minutes with your passport, and gives you a backup connection for the day your villa's internet drops mid-call. Here is which network to pick and how to set it up.

For remote workers, mobile data in Sri Lanka is not just for maps and messaging. It is your safety net. Fiber at your stay will usually carry your work, but power cuts, storms and overloaded guesthouse Wi-Fi happen, and a phone hotspot is what keeps a client call alive when they do.

The good news: local data is cheap, tourist plans are easy to buy, and both main networks now offer eSIMs.

// The networks

Which network to choose

CoverageDialogThe largest network in Sri Lanka. Sells tourist SIMs and a tourist eSIM, with a store in the airport arrival lobby and more than 130 service centers and authorized retailers island-wide.
ValueSLT-MobitelClear, low-priced tourist plans with unlimited local calls, VoLTE, 4G, and 5G in selected areas. Counters at Colombo, Mattala and Jaffna airports, plus an online eSIM portal.
BudgetHutchThe third operator, known for cheap tourist packs and good coverage in towns and tourist areas. Coverage is thinner in rural parts of the island.
StrategyCarry twoPair Dialog with SLT-Mobitel, one as a physical SIM and one as an eSIM. If one network is weak where you are, the other usually is not.

// Prices

Tourist plan prices

SLT-Mobitel publishes its tourist plans clearly, so they make a good benchmark. These are its listed tax-inclusive prices, with rough US dollar equivalents at about LKR 330 to the dollar.

// Buying

Where and how to buy

  • At the airport: Dialog's store and SLT-Mobitel's counters are in the arrival lobby at Bandaranaike International Airport. This is the easiest option on day one.
  • In town: any Dialog service center or SLT-Mobitel outlet can sell and activate a tourist SIM.
  • Online, before you fly: Dialog lets you buy an eSIM online, or reserve a SIM and collect it at the airport store. SLT-Mobitel has an online eSIM portal.

Whichever you choose, bring your passport. Sri Lanka requires SIM registration, and the operator verifies your passport before activating the connection.

Topping up

On Dialog, dial #778# to activate tourist plans. On SLT-Mobitel, dial *100# to check your balance and top up data online with a card. Both networks also have self-care apps.

// eSIM

Local eSIM or travel eSIM?

International travel eSIM apps are convenient: you install them before you fly and land connected. For a short trip that is often worth it. For a stay of a month or more, a local Dialog or SLT-Mobitel eSIM is usually far cheaper per gigabyte and gives you a local number for deliveries, drivers and banks.

A good setup for remote workers: keep your home SIM in the phone for banking codes, and add a local eSIM for data. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked before you travel.

Building a backup connection that works

  • Test the hotspot early. Run a speed test from your desk on day one, on both networks if you carry two.
  • Keep enough data. A video call can use over a gigabyte an hour. The 30GB plan covers occasional backup use; heavy users should look at the unlimited plan.
  • Charge for power cuts. A power bank keeps your phone hotspot running when the electricity goes, and a small UPS does the same for a home router.
  • Know the dead zones. Coverage drops in remote hill country, national parks and some valleys. Plan important calls from town.

// The bottom line

For about the price of a coffee a week, you never lose a working day to bad Wi-Fi.

Buy a Dialog or SLT-Mobitel tourist plan at the airport, add the other as an eSIM if you work online for a living, and test your hotspot before the first call that matters.

// Common questions

SIM cards in Sri Lanka: frequently asked questions

  • Which is the best SIM card in Sri Lanka for remote work?

    Dialog is the largest network with the widest coverage, and SLT-Mobitel has well-priced tourist plans with 4G everywhere it operates and 5G in selected areas. Many long-stay remote workers carry one of each, so a weak signal on one network does not stop their work.

  • Can I get an eSIM in Sri Lanka?

    Yes. Dialog sells a tourist eSIM online and at its airport store, and SLT-Mobitel offers tourist eSIMs through its online eSIM portal and at its airport counters and outlets.

  • What do I need to buy a SIM card in Sri Lanka?

    Your passport. SIM registration is required, and operators verify your passport before activating a tourist SIM or eSIM.

  • How much does a tourist SIM cost in Sri Lanka?

    Very little. SLT-Mobitel lists a 30-day tourist plan with 30GB, unlimited local calls and 1,000 SMS for LKR 1,540, roughly US$5, and an unlimited 30-day data plan for LKR 5,131, roughly US$15.

  • Is mobile data good enough for video calls in Sri Lanka?

    In most towns, yes. 4G is widely available and SLT-Mobitel offers 5G in selected areas, but coverage drops in remote hill country and parks. Use mobile data as a backup to fiber at your stay, not as your only connection.
