This policy explains what personal information MyCity.lk ("MyCity", "we", "us") collects when you use mycity.lk, how we use it, and the choices you have. MyCity.lk is operated from Sri Lanka. If you have any questions, email [email protected].
What MyCity.lk is
MyCity.lk is an independent guide and directory for remote workers, digital nomads and travellers in Sri Lanka. It publishes guides, destination pages and a directory of places to stay, eat, work and explore, and it lets local businesses apply to be listed. You can use most of the site without an account. An account is optional and lets you save places, keep a profile and sync your lists with the upcoming MyCity app.
Information we collect
Information you give us. When you create an account, list a business, book or buy something, join our affiliate program, or contact us, we collect what you enter. This can include your name, email address, phone or WhatsApp number, company name, billing details, listing details and photos, reviews, and the content of your messages.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our servers record technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device, the pages you visit and when. Cookies and similar technologies are used as described below.
Payments. Payments are handled by our payment providers. We receive confirmation of the payment and basic order details, but we do not store full card numbers on our servers.
Accounts and sign-in
You can create an account with your email address and a password, or sign in with Google. When you sign up or log in from a new device we email you a 6-digit code to confirm it is really you. We store your account details (name, email, a securely hashed password if you set one, the profile details you choose to add such as home country, home base, arrival date, interests and a short bio), your saved places and your notification and currency preferences. You can change or remove all of this from your account page.
Google user data
If you choose Continue with Google, MyCity.lk asks Google for three things only: your name, your email address and your Google account identifier (the openid, email and profile scopes). We use them for one purpose, to create your MyCity account or log you in. We do not ask for, and do not receive, your contacts, calendar, Drive files, emails or any other Google data.
- We do not sell Google user data, share it with advertisers, or use it for advertising or profiling.
- We do not give it to anyone except the service providers that run this site for us (for example hosting and email delivery), and only so they can provide that service.
- No person at MyCity.lk reads your Google data except where needed to support your account, keep the site secure, or comply with the law.
- We do not use Google user data to develop, improve or train artificial intelligence or machine-learning models, and we do not transfer it to others for that purpose.
- MyCity.lk's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
How we protect it and how long we keep it. Your Google name, email and account identifier are stored in our site database on our hosting provider, and every connection to MyCity.lk is encrypted with HTTPS. Only authorised staff can access the database, administrator accounts are protected by login limits, and we never store your Google password (Google never shares it with us). We keep this information for as long as your MyCity account exists. If you delete your account, or ask us to by email, we delete it within 30 days.
You can stop using Google sign-in at any time and remove MyCity.lk's access from your Google account at myaccount.google.com/permissions. To delete your MyCity account and the data we hold, use Delete account in your account Settings, or email [email protected]. We will delete it within 30 days, except records we must keep by law.
Invite codes. MyCity is an invite-only community. To create an account you must enter an invite code. We record which code you used and, where the code came from a member, who invited you, so we can keep the community members-only and manage invitations. If you ask for an invite, we keep the details you send (name, email, country, how you heard of us and why you want to join) to review your request.
How we use your information
- To run the site and your account, including logins, listings, bookings, orders and wishlists.
- To reply to messages, enquiries and project briefs, by email or WhatsApp.
- To process payments, send receipts and keep business records.
- To run the affiliate program, including tracking referrals and paying commissions.
- To keep the site secure, prevent fraud and spam (including a bot check and login codes), and fix problems.
- To understand how the site is used so we can improve it.
- To send updates you have asked for. You can unsubscribe at any time.
Cookies
We use necessary cookies to keep you logged in, remember your cart and save your consent choices. With your permission, we may also use functional, analytics and advertising cookies. You can accept, reject or customize non-essential cookies through the cookie banner, and change your choice at any time.
When we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only when needed:
- With businesses you contact or book through a listing, so they can respond to you.
- With service providers who help us run the site, such as hosting, email delivery, payment processing and maps. They may only use the information to provide their service to us.
- Publicly, when you choose to. Reviews, listing details and profile information you publish can be seen by other visitors.
- When required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users and of MyCity.lk.
Third-party content
Some pages include content from other services, such as maps, fonts, videos and social sharing buttons. These services may collect information under their own privacy policies. Links to other websites are not covered by this policy.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information while your account is active or as long as we need it for the purposes above, including legal, tax and accounting requirements. When we no longer need it, we delete or anonymize it.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS). No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or object to the use of your personal information, or to withdraw consent. To make a request, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity first.
Children
MyCity.lk is not intended for children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
