About

Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe of golden sand tucked between jungle-covered hills, where palms hang over the water and a gentle wave peels along one side of the bay. It feels secluded, even though a busy little café scene has grown up around it.

The bay sits near the town of Dikwella, at the eastern end of the south coast’s surf towns. It has become a favorite of surfers, creatives and remote workers who want a slower pace than Weligama or Mirissa.

What to see and do

  • Surf the bay; there is a beach break for beginners and a reef break for experienced surfers.
  • Swim and relax in the sheltered water on calm days.
  • Linger in the cafés around the bay, popular with remote workers.
  • Visit the giant Buddha at Wewurukannala Vihara in nearby Dikwella.

Know before you go

  • Time needed: Half a day, or a stay of several days
  • Access: Short walk down from the road to the bay
  • Cost: Free
  • Etiquette: Cover up when walking away from the beach into the village

Best time to visit

November to April is the main season. The bay gets crowded from December to March, so arrive early for a quieter beach.

Getting there

Hiriketiya is reached via the Southern Expressway to Dikwella, or by train to Matara and then a tuk-tuk or bus east.

Nearby

Coconut Tree Hill and Weligama Bay are along the coast to the west.
