Pidurangala is the rock you climb to see Sigiriya. From its flat summit at sunrise, Lion Rock rises out of a sea of misty jungle just across the plain, one of the finest views in Sri Lanka and far quieter than Sigiriya itself.
Pidurangala has a long religious history, and a temple still sits at its base. The climb passes a large brick reclining Buddha near the top before a short scramble over boulders brings you onto the summit.
What to see and do
- Watch sunrise or sunset over Sigiriya from the summit.
- Visit the reclining Buddha in a rock shelter on the way up.
- Photograph the plains and the surrounding lakes and jungle.
Know before you go
- Time needed: About two hours, including time at the top
- Difficulty: Moderate; steep steps followed by a short boulder scramble that needs care
- Cost: A modest entry fee is collected at the temple
- Dress and etiquette: Cover shoulders and knees when passing through the temple; carry a sarong or scarf
- What to bring: A headlamp for a sunrise climb, water and shoes with good grip
Best time to visit
Sunrise is the classic time; start in the dark to reach the top before first light. Sunset is a good, warmer alternative. The drier months bring the clearest skies.
