As the sun drops toward the Indian Ocean, Galle Face Green comes alive. Families fly kites, couples stroll the seafront promenade, and vendors fry spicy isso vadai prawn cakes and sell grilled corn while waves break against the sea wall, with Colombo’s skyline glowing behind.
This long oceanfront lawn in the heart of Colombo was laid out in the colonial era in the mid-19th century and has been the city’s favorite public open space ever since. The historic Galle Face Hotel stands at its southern end, and the new Port City development rises to the north.
