Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe of golden sand tucked between jungle-covered hills, where palms hang over the water and a gentle wave peels along one side of the bay. It feels secluded, even though a busy little café scene has grown up around it.
The bay sits near the town of Dikwella, at the eastern end of the south coast’s surf towns. It has become a favorite of surfers, creatives and remote workers who want a slower pace than Weligama or Mirissa.
What to see and do
- Surf the bay; there is a beach break for beginners and a reef break for experienced surfers.
- Swim and relax in the sheltered water on calm days.
- Linger in the cafés around the bay, popular with remote workers.
- Visit the giant Buddha at Wewurukannala Vihara in nearby Dikwella.
