Little Adam’s Peak is the hike that sells Ella. In under an hour you go from town, through rows of tea bushes and up a final set of steps, to a grassy ridge where the whole Ella Gap opens below you and the hills fold away toward the southern plains.
The peak takes its name from its resemblance to the far taller Adam’s Peak, but this one asks far less of you. It is one of the easiest big views in the hill country, which is why it suits almost everyone, from families to people who just want a sunrise before breakfast.
What to see and do
- Watch sunrise from the main summit as mist lifts out of the valley.
- Walk the ridge past the first viewpoint to quieter knolls with Ella Rock across the gap.
- Look across to Ella Rock, the tougher hike on the other side of the valley.
- Ride the zipline that operates near the base, if you want an adrenaline add-on.
Know before you go
- Time needed: About two hours return from Ella town, including time at the top
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate; a gentle path then several hundred steps near the top
- Cost: Free
- What to bring: Water, a light layer for early mornings and shoes with grip; steps can be slippery after rain
Best time to visit
Go at sunrise for soft light and cool air, or late afternoon for golden views. January to April usually brings the clearest skies in the hill country; during wetter months, start early before clouds roll in.
Getting there
The trail starts off the Passara Road on the edge of Ella town. Walk from your guesthouse or take a short tuk-tuk ride to the trailhead, then follow the signposted path through the tea estate.
Nearby
Nine Arches Bridge is a short walk away, and Lipton’s Seat near Haputale makes a good next-day sunrise.
